Music for the Young has been running for about 20 years, founded by Lady Caroline Borg, now run by Isabel Saunders (B.Mus), who studied ‘cello at Trinity College of Music. Since having children of her own, Isabel has enjoyed leading various music classes at home and in nurseries.
Our structured classes aim to expand children’s musical appreciation through the development of rhythm, tempo, pitch and melody – with the emphasis being essentially on the wonder and enjoyment of music. The classes are also helpful for co-ordination, concentration, confidence and imagination; and provide useful preparation prior to learning a musical instrument.
For the little ones (6mths-3yrs), we do lots of singing and movement with the use of some percussion, scarves, puppets and toys from our ‘Magic Bag’.
In our 3-4yrs class the children are given the opportunity to develop their musical ability through listening, movement, use of pitched and unpitched percussion, singing, rhythm games and acting out stories, which are accompanied by piano.
The 4-6yrs classes build upon the previous classes, using a greater variety of percussion, also developing their awareness of rhythm and pitch through solfege and Kodaly methods. They are also given more substantial stories to work on every term, such as ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Robinson Crusoe’, ‘Dick Whittington’, ‘Cinderella’, etc.
